Tibetan Monks UK Peace Tour

The purpose of the Lelung Dharma Trust’s Shide-Peace project is to promote peace throughout the world. In order to raise awareness of this mission, the Lelung Dharma Trust has brought a group of Tibetan monks from the Drepung Monastery in South India to the UK. While they are here they are performing a number of sacred activities. One of these is the creating of a sand mandala which I was privilege to witness in St. James’s church in Piccadilly, London.

Buddhism is of interest to me as it promotes a way of living for greater peace and happiness. It considers human behaviour and how we might individually improve our personal behaviour to make the world a better place. It is not about someone else doing something but each of us individually taking responsibility for our own behaviour and in so doing contribute to the whole.

Tibetan sand mandalas are an ancient art form of Tibetan Buddhism. Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘cosmogram’ or ‘world in harmony.’

More generally, a mandala can be both a spiritual and a ritual geometric symbol or map in the Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism or Shintoism religions. In modern, western use ‘mandala’ has become a generic term for a diagram that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically – a cosmic diagram that shows us our relationship to the infinite.

Mandalas can be created by individuals to symbolise their journeys through life. Mandalas can also tell a story of where an individual has been. In come cases they will reveal the individual’s path in life.

The Soul Maps I use have a strong correlation with mandalas, possibly because my main Spirit guide is a Tibetan monk. It is therefore with interest and thanks I watched the Drepung Monastery creating a sand mandala in London. Take a look yourself and see what you think. Click here
