Some relationships are meant to last for decades. Others may be deeply important for a particular stage of our lives and then begin to change.
Knowing when to let go of a relationship or connection can be difficult, especially when there is still affection, shared history or a sense of loyalty between you.
Sometimes a relationship has simply reached the point where it no longer supports who you are becoming.
Recognising that can be painful. But holding on to a relationship simply because it once mattered can sometimes prevent both people from moving forward.

Relationships rarely change overnight.
More often, the shift is gradual. Conversations become less meaningful. You stop sharing the small things. Time together feels more habitual than nourishing.
You may also notice that your values, priorities or direction in life have begun to move apart.
This does not automatically mean the relationship should end. People change, and healthy relationships often need periods of adjustment.
But it is worth noticing whether the connection is still alive in the present, or whether you are mainly relating to what the relationship used to be.
We are often taught that a successful relationship is one that lasts.
But longevity is not the only measure of value.
A relationship may have offered love, companionship, learning, support or growth at a time when you needed it. Those things do not become meaningless simply because the relationship later changes.
Some connections help us discover who we are. Others show us what we need, what we will no longer accept, or how we want to live differently.
An ending does not erase the importance of what came before it.
Sometimes the deeper lesson is learning how to appreciate what a relationship gave us without insisting that it must continue in the same form forever.
Sometimes we sense that a relationship no longer feels right, but struggle to know whether it needs repair or whether it is time to let go.
A difficult period can often be worked through when both people still care, communicate honestly and are willing to make changes.
The question becomes harder when only one person is trying, the same problems repeat without movement, or the relationship is being held together mainly by fear, guilt or habit.
It can help to ask whether the relationship still allows both people to grow.
Are you choosing each other as you are now, or holding on because of who you once were together?
Sometimes the answer is to stay and rebuild.
Sometimes it is to accept that the relationship has completed an important chapter.
Think of a relationship that currently feels uncertain.
Ask yourself:
You do not need to make an immediate decision. Simply notice what comes up.
Letting go does not always mean rejecting the past.
Sometimes it means honouring what a relationship has been while recognising that life is asking both people to move into a different chapter.
There can be sadness in that recognition.
But there can also be wisdom in knowing when to hold on, when to repair, and when to release.
