Feeling Restless? What Your Body May Be Trying to Tell You

When I’m feeling restless, my body sometimes seems to recognise that something needs attention before I can put it into words.

At other times, I feel tired but restless. I don’t want to do anything, yet I cannot settle into doing nothing. I’ve learnt to become curious about both feelings.

When Something Needs to Change

We can become accustomed to situations that no longer feel right.

Perhaps we keep saying yes when we want to say no. We give our time to something that leaves little room for what nourishes us. Or we continue along a familiar path without asking whether it still suits the person we have become.

We may have perfectly reasonable explanations for carrying on. Yet an unsettled feeling remains.

Restlessness can offer an opening for reflection. Where does your attention go when you stop keeping yourself busy? Is there a part of your life you return to, even when you would prefer to think about something else?

You don’t have to make a dramatic decision. Simply acknowledging your discomfort may help you understand what needs adjusting.

When Something Is Waiting to Be Done

Sometimes I recognise a more purposeful restless energy. There is something I have neglected, and it keeps asking for my attention.

An unfinished task can occupy more inner space than we realise. So can a decision we keep postponing or a conversation we have yet to begin.

We may spend considerable energy circling around it.

A useful question is: Is there one thing I would feel relieved to have started?

The first step may be surprisingly small. Write the opening sentence. Make the appointment. Find the information you need.

Then notice how you feel. Has some of that restless energy found somewhere to go?

Feeling Restless Even When You’re Tired

This is the feeling I find particularly interesting: being tired, but unable to settle.

Sometimes something needs doing, and I simply don’t want to do it. Part of me feels the pull of responsibility, while another part resists.

It is tempting to respond by pushing harder. But I think the resistance deserves a hearing.

Am I weary because I need rest? Does the task feel too large? Am I worried about what might happen once I begin? Or have I agreed to something that no longer feels right for me?

Those questions can lead to different responses. I might need to break the task into smaller pieces, ask for help, reconsider a commitment, or allow myself to stop for the day.

🌱 Practice of the Week: Listen Before Interpreting

Within my spiritual practice, listening inwardly includes noticing my body as well as my thoughts. Try giving your own feelings a few quiet minutes this week.

Pause. Feel the support beneath you. Let your breathing find its own comfortable rhythm.

Notice. Where do you feel unsettled? What were you thinking about when the feeling arrived? Observe without trying to remove it.

Ask. What needs my attention – and what can wait? Would rest, a small action or an honest acknowledgement help me now?

Respond. Try one gentle response, then notice whether anything shifts. An answer may come quietly or take time.

You don’t need to interpret every sensation. Sometimes we are simply tired, uncomfortable or overstimulated. Curiosity leaves room for that too.

✨ Final Reflection

When my body is calm, I often feel that my life is sitting comfortably with me. That sense of ease has become a useful personal guide.

Restlessness takes more listening. It may invite action, change or recovery.

This week, ask yourself: What might help me feel more at ease with my life?

Let the answer be small, honest and kind.
