Green Witch
Since the Winter Solstice on 21 December, the light has already been returning. At first, the change is subtle — often felt before it can be measured. Many people sense it as a slight lifting, a softening of the dark.
Instead, Imbolc arrives not to begin this process, but to honour it. It marks a conscious pause in the year, when we notice the returning light.
This is why Imbolc has always been a festival of flame.
The return of the light
At Imbolc, however, we are not celebrating spring. We are honouring the first stirring that makes spring possible.
Historically, this time of year was marked with candles and hearth fires. Light was welcomed back into homes and hearts alike. The flame symbolised hope, renewal, and the quiet courage to begin again.
In nature, seeds are still hidden beneath the soil. Nothing appears to be happening. Even so, the light is working below the surface, gently warming what has been dormant.
Why candle rituals suit Imbolc
A candle mirrors the energy of Imbolc perfectly.
It does not rush.
Nor does it force change.
It simply holds light.
An Imbolc candle ritual allows us to acknowledge what is beginning to shift, without demanding results. It is less about manifestation and more about tending the first spark.
For this reason, candle work is especially suited to this time of year.
A simple Imbolc candle ritual
Choose a candle that reflects freshness and clarity. White, cream, or pale green are all appropriate. As you light the candle, pause and notice the return of light — both in the season and within yourself.
Rather than setting a goal, consider naming a quality you wish to nurture as the light grows. This might be clarity, courage, renewal, or trust in what is unfolding.
Herbs can be added as gentle allies to support this intention.
Mint brings freshness and mental clarity, helping to lift the heaviness of winter.
Lemon balm supports gentle joy and emotional renewal as the light returns.
Thyme offers quiet strength and courage, ideal for early beginnings.
You may place the herbs beside the candle, lightly dress the candle with infused oil. Or perhaps simply hold their presence in mind. There is no single correct method. Imbolc favours simplicity and sincerity.
Working with nature’s timing
As the candle burns, allow yourself to sit without expectation. This is not a time for pushing forward. Instead, it is a time for listening inwardly and warming what has been resting.
In nature, Imbolc reminds us that change begins long before it becomes visible. Light lengthens before warmth arrives. Seeds stir before shoots appear. The return of the light does its work quietly.
By honouring Imbolc with a candle ritual and herbs, we align ourselves with this natural rhythm. We choose patience over pressure, and care over effort.
In a world that often demands instant results, Imbolc offers a gentler wisdom.
Tend the flame.
Trust the light.
Let what is ready begin.
🌱 Practice for the week
Light a candle once this week and sit with it for a few quiet minutes. Notice where the return of light is already at work in your life, even if nothing has changed outwardly yet.
✨ Final reflection
Not all beginnings arrive with certainty. Some arrive as a flicker, a warmth, or a quiet knowing that the light has begun to return.
