The Myth of Perfect Balance — and What to Do Instead

There’s a quiet myth many of us carry — that balance means splitting everything equally. But what if true harmony looks nothing like that?

Balance is dynamic, not static
Instead of striving for a perfect 50/50 division between work and rest, family and self, or giving and receiving, consider that balance is always in motion. Like walking a tightrope, you adjust moment by moment — leaning one way, then another — based on what life is actually asking of you.

Tune into your body and energy
Some days, balance might mean more rest than action. Other days, it’s full steam ahead. The key is becoming aware of what your body, spirit, and emotions are calling for right now, not clinging to an external ideal of how things should look.

Let go of guilt and perfection
If you’re juggling multiple roles — parent, partner, professional, carer, seeker — it’s easy to feel like you’re failing someone when the scales tip. But releasing the guilt can be liberating. Harmony comes from conscious choice, not perfect allocation.

Live by rhythm, not rule
Nature offers a better model. Trees don’t try to balance sun and shade equally each day — they follow the seasons. You can, too. Maybe winter is quieter for you, and spring is more outward-focused. Honour your natural cycles, and you’ll find more peace than any fixed routine can offer.

Practice of the Week

Each evening, ask yourself:

What did I need most today, and did I give it to myself?

This simple check-in helps you recognise your current rhythm and to make intuitive adjustments.

You don’t need to do it all, all the time

When you begin living from your own inner harmony, rather than someone else’s definition of balance, life feels more spacious and soulful.
