Mother Nature: heals your soul

Living in a town or city it is too easy to slip into an urban life and lose touch with nature.  Yet it is while experiencing nature that often we feel more alive, happy and well.  Many people pursue a sport such as sailing, canoeing or horse riding that brings you close to nature. However staying in touch with nature can be as simple as a walk in the park.  It can be equally exhilarating as jumping a hedge with a horse.

Last week on my daily walk the sky opened and it poured with hard, thunder rain. I had a choice of turning for home or continuing to the park.  I went for the park and I was not disappointed.

Rain pounded my umbrella giving off an energetic and insistent sound.  Mother Nature was showing me her awesome strength in each drop of rain.  The air stirred and its cool January feel stroked my cheeks.  Breathing the air deeply in, it felt like the rain had cleansed it so it was now as fresh as a stream.

The normally busy park, a favourite place with families, was empty.  The magnificent trees and green grass were all there for me.  The rain was so hard water was running off the grass and down a path creating big puddles along the way.  Jumping the puddles trying to keep my feet dry reminded me of puddle splashing in my Wellington boots as a child.  I ran to a shelter and watched the storm cross the park.  There was a cacophony of noise, movement and changing colours of the sky and landscape.  It was like a magical movie Mother Nature had put on for me.  When the grand finale was over, the sky cleared and the trees calmed down.  No matter what troubles I may have had at home or at work, they were forgotten while I enjoyed my nature movie.  My mood felt uplifted, my lungs clear and I was energised.

It really is worth staying in touch with Mother Nature, she is a great healer.
