How to Grow Your Own Good Luck

A small moment in a greenhouse

As this new year begins, I keep returning to a small moment from last autumn. I have been thinking about the idea of how we grow our own good luck.
While visiting my daughter in Switzerland, she took me to the city’s hot houses, knowing how much I love plants. There, tucked away among the greenery, we noticed a tiny four-leaf clover. It was quietly thriving and offering its visitors a symbol of good luck.

It wasn’t dramatic or showy.
It wasn’t planted on purpose.
Instead, it was simply growing where the conditions allowed it to flourish.

What good luck really needs

That clover stayed with me because it changed how I think about luck.
Often, we imagine good luck as something random — something that either arrives or doesn’t. In nature, however, growth rarely happens by chance alone. It depends on light, soil, patience, and care.

Over time, I’ve begun to see good luck in much the same way. While chance always plays its part, we also shape our own luck through attention, choice, and gentle persistence. As I move through my own house-moving journey, I’m learning that luck often follows when we listen carefully. It also follows when we take steady steps toward what truly matters.

Choosing what you move towards

The start of a new year is a natural moment to notice what you’re moving towards.
Not in terms of pressure or resolution, but in quiet intention. What would you genuinely like to invite into your life this year? And, just as importantly, what small, conscious steps might help create the right conditions for it to grow?

Sometimes, good luck isn’t something we wait for.
Instead, it’s something we quietly cultivate.

🌱 Practice for the week

Notice where something is already growing easily in your life. Then ask yourself what conditions are supporting it — and how you might apply that same care elsewhere.

Final reflection

Like the four-leaf clover, good luck often appears when we’re paying attention. When we choose where to stand, we determine our path. By nurturing what matters, we foster growth. By moving forward gently, we may discover we’ve been growing our own good fortune all along.
